Six candidates for Governor of California are in the 2010 governor's race until Election Day on November 2nd. 

Which candidates for California governor are still standing, as of August 2010, to battle it out until the general election over the issues that California voters find most important?

Carlos Alvarez  (24, Southern California)  Peace and Freedom Party.  Gay socialist.  Gay rights activist.  Anti-Israel / Anti-war protest organizer.  Proposes $15/hour minimum wage, free college education, free health care, free abortions, same sex marriage, voting rights at age 16, giving vacant housing to the homeless, and creating an immigrant sanctuary state.  Opposes Arizona's SB 1070.

Jerry Brown  (72, Northern California)  Democratic Party.  Ultra-liberal standard bearer.  California Attorney General.  Former Oakland mayor.  Elected California Governor in 1974 and 1978.  40-year career in politics.  Environmentalist who promotes sustainability, green construction, and reduction of global warming.  Gun control advocate.  Promotes same sex marriage.  Opposes Arizona's SB 1070.

Chelene Nightingale  (45, Southern California)  American Independent Party.  Conservative.  Former 25-year Republican.  Strict constitutionalist.  Small businesswoman.  Pro-military.  Former director of Save Our State.  Immigration reformer.  Promotes tax cuts, business development, limited government, states' rights, privacy rights.  Opposes same sex marriage.  Governor Jan Brewer supporter and promoter of Arizona's SB 1070.

Falling Below the Poverty Line

By Deborah Reed, research fellow, Public Policy Institute of California This opinion article appeared in the California Journal in the March 2002 issue For people in many parts of the country and the world, California is synonymous with wealth, opportunity - and extremes. When it slid during the recession of the early 1990s, it slid farther than many other parts of the country. When it rebounded, the technological boom was felt around the world. By the end of that recent boom, it had become the fifth-largest economy in the world - not something one necessarily associates with high poverty rates Yet, the truth is that after keeping its poverty levels below the national average for decades, the trend is now reversed. Today - and even during the recent years of prosperity - California poverty rates exceed the rest of the country, where poverty is at its lowest level in more than 30 years.
